A Call to Solidarity

When the American colonies broke away from the rule of the British Empire they issued a list of grievances to King George III. The grievances listed in the Declaration of the Occupation of New York City are different, but the situation is all too familiar. Before sedition occurred the soon to be Americans tried to reconcile with the motherland. I am a firm believer that effective, non-violent, communication can solve a majority of our world’s problems if no one’s voice is dismissed. We are all family and we can’t shake hands with a fist. We do not need to enact civil war to change the status quo. We must simply become the change we want to see and take it upon ourselves, with the help of those who share our pain, to usher in a new era of true democracy by the people for the people.

We have been asleep for many years as our government has been hijacked by corporate influence. Corporations who put profit over people have outsourced American jobs, left us dependent on the depleting source of fossil fuel as well as an unsustainable system based on infinite growth in a world of finite resources. Once this, and other issues, where realized by a significant number of people a plan crystallized and fell into place. The Occupy Movement, which started in NYC on September 17th, has spread like wildfire across the United States and to many other nations of the world including New Zealand, Canada, Australia, England, Italy, Spain, and others, despite the media blackouts and spin-doctoring. We the people of the world wide Occupy Movement stand in solidarity with one another and say no to the poisoning of our food supply, no to military engagements which for the last few decades have been based on gaining economic and political power not on necessity. These wars have taken place at the expense of the lives of countless soldiers who are our brothers and sisters, children, spouses, parents, and friends and have resulted in the the death of thousands of other innocent lives. We do have ourselves partly to blame for not paying attention for so long, but they tricked us into blind obedience through the mass media, the perpetuation of fear and violence over love and peace, and the nonstop barrage of advertisements which try to convince us that we are not good enough and that we need a bunch of useless garbage . But now that we are awake, informed and know what’s at stake, we set forth peacefully to have our voices heard and to embody the change we wish to take place. Brothers and sisters of the world it’s time we stand up for what’s right. The system that is supposed to protect us has come to reject us and to sacrifice our safety for the sake of profit! Stand with us if this is how you feel. Another world is possible, but only together can we make it real. We must unify and take a stand for the collective good of our families, communities, and for all of humanity. It is insanity to act in the interest of the few and not the many for it is not people who should be afraid of their governments but governments who should be afraid of their people. The individual may be weak but together we are strong. The United States is a nation conceived of through revolution! That fact is our legacy! Freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are our birth right! This they have denied us through unsafe working conditions, discrimination in the work place, and the perpetuation of stereotypes in the media and in Hollywood. They have held us in indentured servitude through debt on loans for education which to even pay for is a direct violation of our human rights. They have allowed dangerous products to enter the market, and they have denied us universal health-care which is a human rights violation! We will no longer allow the few to dictate the lives of the many!


As a final remark I’d like to remind you all of a specific quote in the Declaration of Independence, “whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive… it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.” This is the role of the General Assembly, to act as a consensus form of direct democracy in place of the mad republic gone wild.
